Ten Australians will descend on Scotland for the opening rounds of the 2022 UCI BMX Racing World Cup at the Glasgow BMX Centre from May 28-29.

This will be the first international BMX race in Glasgow in over four years and is a perfect warm-up for the facility, which will host the 2023 UCI BMX Racing World Championships – one of the many Championships taking place during the first 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships.

Tokyo Olympian Saya Sakakibara will don the green and gold at her first World Cup event since the opening rounds in 2020, which saw her finish second and fourth in Shepparton. The current national champion will be Australia’s only female rider in Glasgow.

In the men’s elite field, six Australian riders will go bar to bar with the best of the best, including back-to-back Australian champion Izaac Kennedy.

Kennedy is sitting second in the USA BMX Men’s Pro standings after grabbing his first win two weeks ago, is in red-hot form and will be keen to replicate it on the world stage.

“I’m excited to get the World Cup season started,” said Kennedy.

“I feel great after a solid start to my USA BMX season and getting my first win there last week. The goal is to keep the ball rolling into the first round.

The Glasgow track is a new track for Kennedy, but the Nerang BMX rider is to test it out and got to Glasgow a few days early to get to grips with it.

“I didn’t know too much about it before I got here,” Kennedy said.

“I watched some racing here before, but that’s about it. I really like it, though. It’s technical but still pretty wide open and should be a good race track.

“I’m glad I got here earlier to get some more time on the track to get dialled in some more, it should be an exciting weekend.”

Joining Kennedy in the stacked men’s elite field is Oceania champion Bodi Turner, Aston Wypych-Coles, Brad Game, Wade Turner and Max Cairns.

In the men under 23 field, Oceania champion Jack Davis, Oli Moran and Kyle Hill will race in the 92-strong class.
