Birmingham 2022 Track Cycling: Day 4 Australian preview
NATWell, hasn’t that just flown on by! The final track session of Birmingham 2022 has arrived.
Here’s everything to know and keep on your radar for the last day at Lee Valley VeloPark.
Women’s Keirin
- Riders: Kristina Clonan, Breanna Hargrave and Alessia McCaig
- When: First round from 11:02pm AEST (all times AEST)
The women’s keirin will be an exciting hoorah to the women’s sprinting program at Birmingham 2022, with all three Aussie sprint women in action once again.
Clonan will be riding a wave of confidence after her gold medal 500m time trial performance last night and is Australia’s best chance of a medal.
Clonan will face a tough fight from New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews, the keirin silver medallist from Tokyo 2020, and Canadian pair Kelsey Mitchell and Lauriane Genest. The latter finished third behind Andrews in Tokyo.
For Hargrave and McCaig, making the 1-6 final will be a great achievement and a rewarding way to end their Commonwealth Games.
Men’s Points Race
- Riders: Graeme Frislie, Conor Leahy and Lucas Plapp
- When: Final at 2:03am
It’s been hinted at nearly every night in commentary, but we can confirm that Lucas Plapp is champing at the bit for the points race gold.
If everything is going to plan, then Plappy should start to make his presence felt in the second half of the 160 laps.
However, as shown last night in the men’s scratch race, the pace will be hot and the winner of the points race will most likely need to be right in the mixer from the opening sprint laps.
Last night’s scratch race winner Corbin Strong (New Zealand) is a demon on the boards and is clearly at his best here for the bunch races.
His teammates Aaron Gate and Campbell Stewart are also incredibly dangerous.
The Australian trio will need to follow any move made by one of the Kiwis because all three know how to take a lap in the blink of an eye.
Men’s 1000m Time Trial
- Riders: Matthew Glaetzer, Matthew Richardson and Thomas Cornish
- When: Final from 12:02am
The men’s 1000m time trial will be a great watch, with Matthew Glaetzer looking to end his Birmingham 2022 experience on a high note and young Thomas Cornish one of the best kilo riders in the world.
It’s been a long, long time since Matthew Richardson put a kilo time down in a race setting and is an unknown commodity over four all-out laps.
Trinidadian Nicholas Paul is one of the favourites.
Women’s Scratch Race
- Riders: Sophie Edwards, Chloe Moran and Alyssa Polites
- When: Final from 1:28am
The women’s squad will be up and about after last night’s team-driven points race domination led by Georgia Baker.
Moran will be the protected rider here and is showing signs of fantastic form.
However, she did selflessly bury herself last night in service of Baker and tonight’s performance will be dictated by her recovery from that effort.
Another great story to watch in this one is the debut of Alyssa Polites on the boards for the first time at Birmingham 2022.
The 19-year-old's preparation for the Games was hampered by COVID but she is a fighter and will put it all on the line tonight for Moran, as will the dependable Sophie Edwards.
