Community bike riding set for major boost

Dec 10, 2021

Community bike riding is set to benefit from a $5 million commitment from Australia's Morrison Government which will assist AusCycling to deliver its Ride Nation program to more people across the country.

AusCycling welcomed Friday’s announcement which came in conjunction with the unveiling of the stunning courses for 2022 UCI Road Cycling World Championships to be held in Wollongong in September.

Ride Nation is AusCycling's dedicated participation brand aimed at encouraging more people to enjoy riding their bike, while also improving environmental sustainability and encouraging riding a bike as a means of getting around.

AusCycling CEO Marne Fechner welcomed the investment.

‘’Wollongong was always going to stage a world-class Championship and celebration of cycling. What this funding does is ensure that the team can set a new standard for international events of this kind,’’ Fechner said.

‘’Equally important is that we can use what will be a dynamic and compelling experience to create a sustainable legacy of programs, infrastructure, training, and activities to bring the joys and benefits of riding to many more Australians.

‘’We thank the Sports Minister, Senator Richard Colbeck, the Federal Government and the people of Wollongong for their support of this landmark event and the legacy it will create.’’

Nicole Adamson, AusCycling’s Executive General Manager of Participation Products, echoed Fechner.

“We are excited we can take good work of Ride Nation to achieve broader community engagement,” said Adamson. “We know that bike riding has health, environment and social connection benefits, and we look forward to working with more communities to embed bike riding.”

Minister for Sport Richard Colbeck said the new funding will help boost the event’s international profile, support sustainability measures and increase accessibility and inclusivity for spectators and volunteers.

“The UCI Road Cycling World Championships will be the first in a decade of global sporting events heading to Australia, culminating in the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Minister Colbeck said.

“We have a long and proud history of hosting major international sport events. They bring Australians together, showcase our world-class sporting stars and inspire future generations.”

Wollongong 2022 Chair Dean Dalla Valle said the Morrison Government’s support would strengthen the long-term benefits for cycling and the city of Wollongong.

“Australian Government investment in these initiatives will ensure significant economic and broader holistic benefits for the nation, the sport and the local community of Wollongong which is incredibly proud to host this global event,” Mr Dalla Valle said.
