Vale Robert Bates (1948–2022)

AusCycling life member Robert Bates has died at the age of 73.

After racing as a competitive cyclist, Bates served as a director of Cycling Australia for nine years from 2005 to 2014.

Bates was the Finance Director for Cycling Australia during his time on the board, contributing his professional experience as an accountant. He also chaired Cycling Australia’s Road Commission and Track Commission.

Bates had previously served as president of Cycling NSW.

Throughout his time in administration, Bates was consistently involved in the conduct of track and road cycling events, especially in his capacity as a commissaire.

He remained a committed volunteer with Parramatta Cycling Club until late in life, principally serving as club treasurer.

Bates was a devoted father to Natalie Bates and Kate Bates, two of Australia’s most successful road and track cyclists during the 2000s. He is survived by his wife, Judy.

AusCycling extends its sympathies to Robert Bates’ friends, family and clubmates.
