Swept up in Broome for the Fat Bike National Championships

Apr 6, 2021

Broome's iconic and world acclaimed Cable Beach will host the 2021 AusCycling Fat Bike National Championships on Friday, 14 May 2021.

The event is one of the feature races on the 2021 AusCycling Mountain Bike National Cup calendar.

The rider's tyres need to be larger than 3.8' (97mm) wide to participate.

The AusCycling Fat Bike National Championship course is 21 kilometres. A 9.4-metre-high tide will compact the white beach sands of Cable Beach to create a super-fast first stage.

Competitors are then drawn up through the dunes and onto the Lurujarri Heritage Trail, a traditional songline of the Yawuru – custodians of Country.

The Yawuru Minyirr Buru Conservation sandy trails will favour the wide balloon tyres of the fat bikes as riders weave through the open mixed savannah of monsoon vine thickets and coastal dune vegetation.

Competitors leave the trail system at Gantheaume Point over Pindan Cliffs before heading north back to Cable Beach.

Senior competitors complete a second lap of Minyirr Park – junior competitors head straight for the finish line and national championship honours following a 14-kilometre course.

The AusCycling Fat Bike National Championships are proudly supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the Shire of Broome and BDM Leather and Canvas.

There will be men's and women's champions titles in the below categories:
