Masters champions crowned in Wollongong

Sep 17, 2022

Fifty-five masters national champions have been crowned at the 2022 AusCycling Masters and Junior Road National Championships in Wollongong.

The combined masters and junior event was run over four days and featured an individual time trial atop Mount Keira, a criterium at the Illawarra Criterium Track, and two days of road races at Marshall Mount.

Local riders from Illawarra Cycle Club collected three gold medals: David Deitz took out the Masters 5 Men criterium before Angela Gates and Luke Meers enjoyed success in their road races.

Two riders enjoyed a perfect week with triple national titles. Nicole Oh (Sydney Uni VC) and Clare Johnston (Gold Coast CC) both achieved a hat-trick of victories across the three disciplines.

It meant that Oh, who has previously spent time racing in the United Kingdom, added her first, second and third green-and-gold jerseys to her collection.

“I’ve got a couple of British ones (jerseys). I hadn’t got an Australia one yet,” said Oh.

“The TT was a bonus, but I really wanted to win the crit, because I’ve got a crit British jersey. So now I’m happy.”

Nicole Oh won all three events in her category at the 2022 AusCycling Masters Road National Championships.

These championships brought together the best of Australia’s masters and junior competitors into one place. The events had previously been held separately.

“It’s been great, there’s so many people here,” Oh said. “The feeling that there’s a big event here, you can feel it.

“It’s great to see there’s so many juniors. I didn’t know there were that many junior riders in Australia, it’s really good.”

The AusCycling Masters and Junior Road National Championships were a curtain-raiser to the UCI Road World Championships, which begin tomorrow in Wollongong.
