Introducing AusCycling’s Junior Road State and Territory Series

AusCycling has launched a new suite of state and territory series for junior road cyclists today.

This year, riders between the ages of 11 and 16 will compete in a season-long competition in the ACT and New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.

A smaller set of events has been announced in Tasmania and Western Australia, with an ambition for future expansion. A total of 24 events have been announced.

AusCycling welcomes a group of new sponsors who will be supporting the series and event hosts with prizes. Those sponsors are Bryton, Santini, Northwave, Morgan Blue and BBB.

While each state has specific regulations to fit its unique circumstances, these features are common to all series:

• Under-13s, Under-15s and Under-17s are eligible for series prizes (but events can include other age categories)
• Series points awarded in stages and one-day races
• Bonus points awarded for GC places in stage races
• Top placers win trophies

It’s the first time AusCycling has adopted a consistent structure for junior road racing across these states and territories.

The series will give regular opportunities for Australia’s juniors to develop skills and confidence one step above club level.

That’s particularly important because such opportunities were frustrated during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Kipp Kaufmann, AusCycling's Executive General Manager for Sport.

“The series is seeking to provide a consistent offering across the country,” Kaufmann said. “After two years of disruptions, to have an expanded offering for junior riders will make it an exciting year ahead.

“Particularly exciting is the development of new series in South Australia, NSW and ACT, and Queensland.”

AusCycling is actively working with its clubs and community to add more events in the future in Tasmania and Western Australia.

“We hope to see this expand over the coming years to increase the quality and consistency of junior road events in Australia,” Kaufmann said.

Kaufmann said that these events will be critical for rider development ahead of the AusCycling Junior Road National Championships in Wollongong – the first such championships since 2019.
