Clubs in Focus: The 12-year-old from Hobart Wheelers Dirt Devils who has raced 140 club events

At just 12 years of age, Hobart Wheelers Dirt Devils rider Ivy Natera has racked up 140 club races and counting.

After she took part in a junior skills session hosted by the club in 2021, Ivy was hooked to cycling.

She soon joined her father Josh and brother Sid as a member of the Tasmanian-based club. Within weeks, she got her own road bike and was off and racing.

"I would come along and watch (my father and brother race) and get bored, so I joined in as well. Then I started to ride my bike on closed tracks and on MTB fire trails with Dad," Ivy said.

Since then, out of all 400 club members, Ivy has led the count of most club event participations.

While her favourite discipline is track, Ivy enjoys the wide variety of events hosted by Hobart Wheelers Dirt Devils throughout the year including road races and cyclo-cross, which she competes in using her mountain bike.

"My favourite cycling discipline is track cycling because it's fast, intense, and exciting to watch. I enjoy the energy of the velodrome and the quick, tactical races," Ivy said.

Above all else, Ivy enjoys riding her bike because it's "super fun".

"I love going fast and feeling the wind on my face. I like trying to beat my own time and getting better every time I ride," she said.

"Sometimes it’s hard, but I don’t give up because it makes me feel strong and proud."

Hobart Wheelers Dirt Devils President Andrew Daly praised Ivy for her consistency and easygoing nature.

"She lines up at every opportunity regardless of the discipline. We are looking forward to seeing her progress and hopefully follow in the footsteps of our current pro riders," Daly said.

Ivy's cycling heroes include senior clubmates Felicity Wilson-Haffenden and Nicole Frain. The Tasmanian club has also produced MTB stars such as Olympians Sid Taberlay and Scott Bowden.
