Australians have enjoyed another richly successful edition of the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, returning from Niseko, Japan with 17 medals.
The premier international event for amateur road cyclists brought together some 1,400 riders from 64 countries to compete in their age categories in the time trial, team relay and road races.
Australia has a stellar history in this event, recently hosting last year's edition on the Great Ocean Road, Victoria.
The medals came flowing again this year, including four world titles in Thursday's time trials and four more in yesterday's road races.
Indeed, with eight gold, six silver and three bronze, Australia topped the medal tally as the most successful nation of the event, beating Poland (seven gold) and the USA, Netherlands and New Zealand (each four gold).
