Worlds: Australia closes 2023 track campaign with 20 medals in Glasgow

Aug 10, 2023

The ARA Australian Cycling Team has finished with 20 track medals at the UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, including four world titles.

Four gold, 11 silver and five bronze was the Aussie tally at the combined para-cycling and able-bodied program at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

Amanda Reid brought home four medals herself, including the C2 Omnium and 500m Time Trial world titles. Emily Petricola and Alana Forster added two more rainbow jerseys in the para-cycling program.

Georgia Baker enjoyed two remarkable nights on the boards, winning silver in the points race and the Madison, the latter with Alex Manly. Australia’s women’s tandem pairing of Jessica Gallagher and Caitlin Ward also finished with two runner-up placings.

Australia’s men’s sprint squad had a strong campaign, despite walking away without a rainbow jersey. Silver in the team sprint was backed up by individual medals to Tom Cornish, Matthew Glaetzer and Matthew Richardson in the kilo and keirin.

Jesse Korf, AusCycling’s Executive General Manager of Performance, said, “Looking back at the track campaign, two thoughts come to mind.

“First and foremost, we are incredibly proud of the team on how they represented the green and gold. The amount of medals won indicate the team made a solid step forward again, which certainly grows belief one year out from the Games.

“In that same breath, we have work to do when looking forward to next year to fully dial in to be the best we can be at the Games.

“For now, the feeling that dominates is that of pride in the performances that have been put in and the solid improvement the team made from the past few years.”

Matt Richardson said, “Although we got pretty much silvers all-round, and one bronze, I think it was a really positive World Championships. We were right there in the mix leading into Paris.

“There were a couple of negatives – my flying 200 probably wasn’t the greatest – but it’s all learnings. It’s all about recovery, nutrition and just learning as much as possible coming into Paris.”

The UCI Cycling World Championships continue until August 13.
