Georgia Baker
Georgia Baker was an all-round sporting talent when she was growing up in Launceston, competing in netball, swimming and triathlon as well as earning a black belt in taekwondo.
After she was identified by the Tasmanian Institute of Sport for cycling, she became a multiple junior track world champion in 2011 and 2012.
In 2016, Baker made her elite world championships debut, finishing fifth in the team pursuit and fourth in the points race.
Those results booked Baker a place at her first Olympic Games, but a crash in training curtailed Australia's chances of a podium result in Rio. Baker and her teammates eventually finished fifth in the team pursuit.
At the 2019 world championships in Poland, Baker joined Ashlee Ankudinoff, Amy Cure, Annette Edmondson and Alexandra Manly to win the team pursuit. Baker also won silver in the Madison with Cure.
During the 2019–2020 UCI World Cup season, Georgia excelled with three gold medals in the Madison and one in the team pursuit. She also won the 2020 Madison national title with Ankudinoff.
Baker made her second Olympic appearance at Tokyo 2020 in the team pursuit, where Australia again finished fifth. She also paired up with Edmondson in the first-ever Olympic women’s Madison, finishing ninth.
In 2022, Baker won the elimination national title. That year, she competed professionally on the road for the first time, winning a bunch sprint at the LOTTO Thüringen Ladies Tour and placing second in the prologue at the Giro d’Italia.
Her next representative appearance was at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she won three gold medals across road and track cycling: in the team pursuit, points race, and road race.
Later that year, she rode at the UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong. On home soil, Baker placed eighth in the individual time trial before helping Australia to win a bronze medal in the mixed relay team time trial.
At the end of 2022, Baker paired up with Alexandra Manly to win their first Madison national title together – a title they would confidently defend one year later.
In 2023, Baker and Manly again joined up at the 2023 UCI Track World Championships in Glasgow, where they won silver in the Madison for the ARA Australian Cycling Team. Baker also won the silver medal in the points race.
Baker then returned to Australia and won the omnium national title.
She will make her third Olympic Games appearance in track cycling at Paris 2024.
