Georgia Baker emulates Aussie teammate with first road win at Lotto Thüringen Tour

One day after Alex Manly took her first road race victory, fellow Australian Cycling Team rider Georgia Baker has matched the feat by winning stage two of the Lotto Thüringen Ladies Tour.

Riding for Team BikeExchange-Jayco, Baker appeared to have been setting up Manly and Ruby Roseman-Gannon for the bunch sprint in the city of Gera. However, the Tasmanian exited the final corner at the head of the peloton and held off all challengers to cross the line first.

Just like Manly’s yesterday, this was Baker’s first professional road win. The 27-year-old is in her first season back on the road since representing Australia on the track at the Tokyo Olympic Games and UCI Track World Championships last year.

“We had a really good, strong team ride today,” Baker said. “Our main goal was to keep Alex in the yellow jersey, so a stage win was just a bonus. To be honest, that wasn’t our plan, for me to win today, it just so happened that’s how it worked out, so I’m really happy with that.”

Baker has been a multiple junior track world champion. She won the elite team pursuit world championship in 2019 with an Australian Cycling Team squad that also included Manly.

Manly retains the lead in the general classification ahead of tomorrow’s lumpy stage in Dörtendorf.
