Vikings CC wins National Club Esports Series

Oct 23, 2021

The ACT’s road and track clubs have finished on top in the AusCycling National Club Esports Series.

Vikings Cycling Club led the series from start to finish, winning by a commanding 428 points ahead of crosstown rivals Canberra Cycling Club.

eRANDWICK completed a late rally and nearly snatched the silver position, finishing just 48 points behind in third.

The sixth and final round took place on Zwift’s Champs Élysées on Wednesday evening, with riders tackling three laps of the traditional Tour de France circuit.

With their lead exceeding 300 points, a Vikings CC victory was all but assured. However, there was a close battle on the cards between eRANDWICK, former winner Waratah Masters Cycling Club and Bathurst Cycling Club for the final podium spot.

As it has done all series, Vikings CC showed up with strength in numbers, particularly in C and D Grades. Katie Gregory, Elizabeth Lowe, Kirsty Lower and Rob Fisher had been scoring consistently all series long, and the final round was no different. The win was a formality for the Canberra-based club, which can now lay claim to being Australia’s number-one cycling esports club.

eRANDWICK saved their best for last, with a whole host of top-five finishers in Marjan McGarry (A Grade Women), Natasha Cogle (C Grade Women), Chris Ling (A Grade Men), Ian Morrison and Nicholas Johns (B Grade Men), Peter Selkrig (C Grade Men) and Michael Cloros (D Grade Men). Strong performance across the grades secured bronze for the Sydney club to go with second place in the inaugural series earlier this year.

Australia’s highest level of virtual racing continues next weekend with the AusCycling Esports Tour, a brand-new three-day stage race on Zwift.
