VIDEO: Meet the Canberra BMX Mummas

Sep 19, 2023

A BMX club in the ACT have recently begun a program aimed at getting more women involved in the sport by encouraging the mothers of junior riders to ride BMX bikes together.

Informally called ‘The BMX Mummas’, the Canberra BMX group currently consists of about five women who ride together at club meetings and on training nights, where they gain basic riding skills and build their confidence on the bike.

Originally the brainchild of Canberra BMX Registrar Chrissie Hooper, the BMX Mummas also spend time talking and socialising, building bonds in an under-represented BMX group.

By showing that age is no barrier, the group also hope to keep younger female riders in the sport for longer.

They welcome local women to join them, and encourage other clubs to build their own BMX Mumma programs into their training sessions and clubbies.

To find out more about why women love riding in the BMX Mummas, AusCycling recently went along to a Canberra BMX gates session.
