Vale Merv McDonald OAM

Feb 23, 2022

AusCycling is saddened to learn of the peaceful passing of Merv McDonald OAM on Sunday, February 20.

Merv was a loved husband, father, poppy, brother, cyclist, masters world time trial champion, super coach, commissaire, square dance caller extraordinaire and all round beautiful man.

A talented Queanbeyan sportsman and champion cyclist, Merv and his wife Gwen relocated to the Sunshine Coast after a 39-year-long stint in the public service and a notable career in cycling as a rider, coach and official.

Merv McDonaldHe was awarded an OAM for his services to cycling in 1989.

McDonald's passion for coaching continued on the Sunshine Coast, where he took on the role of junior coach for Sunshine Coast Cycling Club.

Under his guidance junior cycling on the Sunshine Coast flourished, with many of his juniors now going on to represent Australian cycling at so many levels, including current Australian Cycling Team members Kristina Clonan and Alex Martin-Wallace, Team BikeExchange's Nick Schultz and Israel Cycling Academy's Alastair MacKellar.

Merv had an uncanny ability to connect with all the kids he coached and to this day many will all have a ‘Merv moment’ they keep close at hand when needed.

One of Mervs greatest achievements was his role as a technical official in cycling for the Sydney Olympics and Paralympics.

Our thoughts are with Merv's family, friends, and cycling community he contributed so greatly to.
