Vale Lyndon Downing

The Australian BMX racing community has lost one of its great contributors following the passing of AusCycling and Park Orchards BMX Club life member Lyndon Downing at the age of 77.

Lyndon's contribution to BMX racing spanned decades and touched every level of the sport.

Through his expertise, innovation and tireless commitment, he played a pivotal role in the development and operation of BMX racing timing, scoring and event management systems that became a cornerstone of Australian events.

That creation was BEM - BMX Event Manager, launched in 1999 and developed in a volunteer capacity thanks to the support of BMX clubs that used the program.

While much of Lyndon's work took place behind the scenes, its impact was felt by generations of riders, officials, volunteers and event organisers.

From local club racing through to national championships, his dedication helped ensure events were delivered with professionalism, accuracy and consistency.

In 2005, Lyndon was awarded BMX Australia's Official of the Year for his ongoing service.

Lyndon's influence and technological expertise also stretched to numerous countries and their BMX and mountain biking events.

A respected innovator, volunteer and friend to many, Lyndon's impact on the sport extended far beyond the finish line.

Our thoughts are with Lyndon's family, friends and the entire BMX racing community as they mourn his passing.

Lyndon's funeral service will be conducted at Riverlea Estate, Warrandyte on Wednesday, June 17 at 2:30pm. A celebration of his life will follow at The Grand Hotel - Warrandyte.

The funeral will be live streamed via this link.
