U23 Men: ARA Australian Cycling Team selected for Road Worlds

Five exciting young athletes will represent the ARA Australian Cycling Team in the under-23 men’s category at the 2024 UCI Road World Championships in Zurich.

The riders, announced today by the AusCycling National Selection Panel, will seek to follow the likes of Michael Matthews, Damien Howson and Luke Durbridge in becoming under-23 world champions on the road.

Tasmania’s Hamish McKenzie [Update, 20 September: Hamish McKenzie has been forced to withdraw on medical grounds] and Victoria’s Patrick Eddy will line up for the time trial on September 23.

McKenzie has already delivered medal results at this level, having won bronze at last year’s championships in Scotland and silver in the junior event in Wollongong.

Eddy was a back-to-back junior national champion against the clock and has since earned a WorldTour contract with Team dsm-firmenich PostNL.

In the road race, Alastair Mackellar, Luke Tuckwell and reigning Australian champion Fergus Browning will represent the green and gold on September 27.

Mackellar returns with another year’s experience after racing the 2023 UCI World Championships in Glasgow. Earlier this year, the Queenslander won a stage of the UCI 2.2 Alpes Isère Tour and placed fourth in the hilly Flèche Ardennaise one-day race.

Browning just took his first European victory, winning the opening stage of the Tour de l’Ain last weekend.

Meanwhile, Tuckwell, who recently finished 10th overall at the under-23 Giro d’Italia, will make his first world championships appearance.
