Rufus, Turner, Guy and Marsh share spoils in opening rounds of 2025 BMX Racing National Series

Apr 27, 2025

Teya Rufus, Bodi Turner, Charli Guy and Joel Marsh shared the spoils with wins in the opening two rounds of the 2025 AusCycling BMX Racing National Series at the Shepparton Cycling and BMX Track in Victoria.

Perfect weather and more than 700 riders made for an idyllic start to the 2025 series.

Round 1

Superclass Women

Teya Rufus (Maryborough BMX Club) picked up where she left off last year as she owned the opening round in a reminder of why she was crowned the 2024 junior world champion.

After cruising through the moto rounds with clear half a second victories she looked the favourite heading into the finals.

A lighting start in the final saw Rufus take the holeshot and with no mistakes she raced away to the win. Behind, reigning national champion Sienna Pal (Terrigal BMX Club) left it all on the track to take second, with Charli Guy (Ashmore BMX Club) rounding out the top three.

"The day went well, practice went good, and I felt good during the motos. It was a good lead up heading into the finals," Rufus said.

She was full of praise for the track saying, "The track was super fun and technical, the first straight was fast with lots of pedalling, which suited me. The turns were tricky, which I had to work on during the day."

In the Junior Superclass Women, Maya Ellis (Frankston BMX Club) was unbeatable all day, going undefeated through the motos before taking about the semifinal and final to take the early series lead ahead of Danica Memery (Casey BMX Club) and Erica Goodwin (Penrith BMX Club).

Superclass Men

Bodi Turner (Eastfield BMX Club) made a triumphant return to the top step of the podium by producing one of his best ever rides. The 2016 Olympian looked on from all day cruising through the motos with three wins. His only blip was in the semifinal with a fourth place to sneak into the final.

Despite not getting off to a great start, the final quickly became the Turner show as he used his experience to move through the field. Up to third at the first corner, he wasn't done and unleashed a move on the second, which will be talked about for years to take the lead and race away to the line. Matthew Tidswell (The Cove BMX Club) had to settle for second with Jesse Asmus (Nerang BMX Club) completing the top three.

"Good, relatively pain free. I just took it race by race. Didn't get the best start in final, however was able to use my experience, thread the needle into turn 2 and race my way to the win," said Turner.

"The track was smooth, fun and probably the best it's been."

The Junior Superclass Men win went to Harvey Brooks (Knox BMX Club) was on an unstoppable run throughout the day. Having won his three motos he proceeded to double down winning his quarter and semifinals before storming to the final win as well, ahead of Zane Bourke (Maitland Tenambit BMX Club) and Cannyn Hayes (Tea Tree Gully BMX Club).

Adam Carey (Bathurst BMX Club) was in his own league in the Masters category, winning all three motos convincingly before taking the win in the final to seal it.

Round 2

Superclass Women

Charli Guy (Ashmore BMX Club) produced an outstanding ride to cause an upset and take a dominant victory in the women's final. Guy, the 2024 junior silver medallist had produced a consistent day with a win and two thirds in the motos.

In the final it was round one winner Teya Rufus (Maryborough BMX Club) who got off to a perfect start and claimed the holeshot before losing her footing, a moment that Guy capitalised on to take a commanding lead and didn't look back.

A late push by Rufus closed the gap, though it was not enough and settled for second with Lily Greenough (New Zealand) completing the top three.

"Today was definitely not perfect, but at the end of the day I came here to race hard and have fun, and that's what I did in the final," said Guy.

"To win this race is so cool, since I'm racing against some insanely fast girls, so I'm very stoked I put it all together for the final.

"This track is challenging for sure but that just makes the racing that much more interesting! It’s tricky and also a lot of fun and I attacked it as best as I could."

Consistency proved key for Danica Memery (Casey BMX Club) in the junior superclass women as she turned second on round one on into victory on Sunday. Never outside the top three in motos and the semifinal she was too strong in the final taking it out ahead of Erica Goodwin (Penrith BMX Club) and Amelia Stichbury (Tuggeranong BMX Club).

Superclass Men

Joel Marsh (Happy Valley BMX Club) proved consistency was key, with two wins and a second in the motos and first and second in the quarter and semifinals respectively.

The fiercely contested final had it all with Rory Southwell (Macarthur BMX Club) leading for most of the race before Marsh using the corners to his advantage to move through the field.

On the final corner he surged forward to take it home, as Jesse Asmus (Nerang BMX Club) surged from fourth wheel with a late charge for second and Cameron Gatt (Geelong BMX Club) in third.

In the Junior Superclass Men Zane Bourke (Maitland Tenambit BMX Club) improved on second a day earlier to claim round two in a hotly contested final. Matthew Fox (Cairns BMX Club) collected second and Cannyn Hayes (Tea Tree Gully BMX Club) back to back third place finishes.

In the Masters category Adam Carey (Bathurst BMX Club) made it two from two as he was again unbeatable across the day.
