ProVelo Super League: Odette Lynch and Conor Leahy lead after Round 1

Odette Lynch (Butterfields Ziptrak Racing) and Conor Leahy (Team Brennan) have taken the overall lead of the ProVelo Super League after Round 1, SA Kick It, last week.

Lynch launched herself into the general classification lead with a nail-biting finale in the Stage 3 road race at the Bend Motorsport Park.

Heading into the final stage all eyes were on race leader Alyssa Polites (Meridian Bikebug) who won the Stage 1 time trial and finished second behind Keira Will (Team Redcat) in the Stage 2 criterium.

While Polites held a handy 9 second lead over Will and 13 seconds over Lynch, the leader's jersey was up for grabs with crucial bonus seconds on offer for Stage 3.

Lynch and her Butterfields Ziptrak teammates were active early on, as she won both intermediate sprints picking up 6 bonus seconds.

Requiring a win on the stage and Polites to finish outside the top 3, Butterfields Ziptrak delivered Lynch perfectly to the finish where she produced a powerful sprint to win the stage and the overall win, with the difference between Lynch and Polites coming down to fractions of a second.

A dominant performance in the Stage 1 time trial and smart team tactics by Team Brennan saw Conor Leahy secure the general classification lead after Round 1.

Leahy won the 6km time trial around Victoria Park setting a blistering average speed of 50km/h.

His teammate Tom Cornish delivered another win for Team Brennan with an emphatic victory for the Stage 2 criterium.

As Team Brennan looked to defend the leader's jersey for Leahy on Stage 3, a breakaway of five riders stepped away from the field with 30kms remaining.

With one kilometre to go, and the bunch quickly approaching from behind Iven Bennett (Butterfields Ziptrak Racing) launched early from the breakaway and looked set to take the win. But it was Oliver Sims (COBRA9 x Leigh Surveyors Race Team) who came out from the wheel and just managed to come past the Adelaide local to take a gutsy win on his least favoured terrain.

In the bunch sprint, only 2 seconds behind, Leahy was right at the front and secured an impressive overall victory.
