AusCycling has been planning for the 2026 Junior & Masters Road National Championships on the Sunshine Coast for more than six months, working closely with Sunshine Coast Council and relevant authorities to develop a safe and well-managed course. The original course was designed around a recognised road racing course, with detailed traffic management arrangements developed to minimise disruption and provide access for local residents.
However, despite this planning, significant community backlash regarding the proposed road closures has resulted in Council being reluctant to grant the necessary permit for the course as originally planned. Our priority now is the safety of our riders, officials, volunteers and community. Given the strength of the community response, we cannot simply proceed with a course where there are concerns about compliance with traffic management arrangements.
AusCycling is therefore working closely with Council and authorities to assess alternative course options that can be safely approved and delivered, while maintaining the quality and integrity of the National Championships. We understand how much athletes and families have invested in these Championships and are working hard to find the best possible solution for everyone involved. We will provide a further update as soon as arrangements are confirmed.
