My favourite track: 15 Australian BMX riders share their top courses

May 1, 2023

No two BMX tracks are the same. Some suit more technical riders, while others favour power over precision.

To find out the best BMX tracks in the country, we asked some of Australia’s top and up-and-coming young riders where they love to ride at the most, and why.

Did your favourite track make the list? See what our best riders identify as the top tracks in Australia below.

Izaac Kennedy, Nerang BMX Club, QLD

My favourite track in Australia recently is the new Sam Willoughby facility in Adelaide. It’s been a bit of a second home lately and I’ve been able to have some really good days training there, and it has the best view at a BMX track for sure. Although, growing up in Brisbane I always loved Sleeman SX, it’s a bit small now, but it will always be one of my favourites.

Erin Lockwood, Nerang BMX Club, QLD

Sleemans has to be my favourite at the moment, which is funny because at one point it was my least favourite due to crashing and injuring myself so many times there. With the recent changes it’s so much safer and more competitive, with more girls jumping it now.

Jesse Asmus, Nerang BMX Club, QLD

My favourite BMX track has to be the Nerang BMX Club. It has a mixture of everything; there are plenty of jumps to push your skills on, but then the track is also awesome to race on. Another reason I love it is because the track is super smooth and riding it feels awesome.

Teya Rufus, Maryborough BMX Club, QLD

My favourite track is definitely Sleeman. I love training and racing off the 8 metre hill with a fast and flowy first straight. The track is super deep and technical, which makes the racing more of a challenge. It is a really good track to develop skills on and push yourself to learn new things.

Caroline Buchanan, Tuggeranong BMX Club, ACT & Mansfield-Mt Buller Cycling Club, VIC

My favourite BMX Track in Australia has to be my local stomping grounds in Canberra: The Melba BMX track! It’s not only my local club that I trained for the majority of my career, but also where I started at five years old. The elements I love is that it has such a fun downhill deep second straight with a big triple, technical rhythm, and smooth sealed surface. It’s a great track for racing also and old school flat gate.

Matty Tidswell, The Cove BMX Club, SA

My favourite track in Australia is Frankston, Victoria. The drag strip first straight and good corners for passing moves makes for exciting racing.

Max Cairns, Park Orchards BMX Club, VIC

My favourite track is Shepparton. It was the first Tom Ritz track in Australia and had two pro straights that scared me to death when I was 14. It was also the track I won my first national title on (2014), and first elite national round (2015).

Sienna Pal, Terrigal BMX Club, NSW

Shepparton BMX Track, Victoria is one of my favourite Australian tracks, particularly with its 8 metre hill and bigger first straight on the pro side. The rest of the track flows pretty well with lots of different lines to choose, fast and technical, suits my riding style. Seeing as this year’s National Championships will be held at this track, I am more excited than ever to compete!

Imogen Healy, Tea Tree Gully BMX Club, SA

My favourite track would have to be Sleemans. I really like the third straight, because it made me realise how important pumping is. Good pumping gives you rhythm and therefore gives you speed to be in the top spot. It’s where I had my first Nationals and my first national title (2017). It’s a technical track which I love, and where I met heaps of friends.

Joel Marsh, Happy Valley BMX Club, SA

My favourite Aussie BMX track is the Happy Valley BMX Club because the track is technical, supporting development of riders of all levels and because the surface is like no other in Australia, making it super smooth and fast.

Aston Wypych-Coles, Pine Rivers BMX Club, QLD

My favourite BMX Track is Sleeman Sports Complex. The reason I love the track is because it is such a big and hard track allowing our Australian riders to progress especially with the big and difficult second straight.

Bella May, Frankston BMX Club, VIC

My favourite track in Australia would have to be the Sam Willoughby BMX track in South Australia. I love it because it’s technical, flowing, and fast all at the same time. Overall, it’s a great track and I can’t wait to get back there to ride.

Noah Elton, San Remo BMX Club, NSW

My favourite track in Australia would have to be Sleeman SX track for many reasons. Sleeman is a super fun and technical track which I really enjoy riding, along with the big technical second straight. It’s a challenging lap to do which is what makes Sleeman my favourite track in Australia.

Josh Jolly, Ballarat-Sebastopol Cycling Club, VIC

I think my favourite track would have to be Sleeman. The only reason is that’s where I won my first National Championship when I was nine years old.

Alex Cameron, Sydney BMX Club, NSW

My favourite BMX track used to be Bathurst before they changed it. The second straight used to be awesome with the berm jump mod straight, and the switchback was super fun!
