Mammoth Monday at the 2021 AusCycling BMX National Champs

Dec 22, 2021

Over 500 riders competed on the final day of the Championships with 36 National Champions being crowned at the Nerang BMX club.

Outside of the newly crowned elite champions (Men's Recap and Women's Recap), all our 20inch classes raced for the green and gold stripes in a jam-packed day of racing on the tight and technical track of Nerang.

World number one, Tom Tucker took out the 16yrs boy’s title in a class stacked with up-and-coming talent. The Pine Rivers BMX rider was pushed to the end by local rider Flynn Sweeney who was in fine form after taking out the 15-16yrs boy’s cruiser title the day before.

The final was as tight as it could get with Tucker grabbing the holeshot but was challenged by Sweeney on the final straight. The pair were separated by less than two-tenths of a second in an entertaining affair.

Tucker was one of four riders that nabbed the national plate from the Pine Rivers BMX club with the Brendale club taking out the club national championship ahead of Knox BMX club and Nerang BMX club.

A handful of riders did the double over the weekend, taking out the cruiser title on Sunday and the 20inch title on Monday including Charlotte Guy in the 14 girls. The Ashmore BMX club rider backed up her cruiser performance with a flawless 20-inch display.

Alongside Guy, Alan McCrindle did the double in the newly formed 60+ men’s class with the 63-year old competing in a merged class with the 55-59 men’s.

Joining Guy and McCrindle with two titles this weekend was:

  • Toby Hatfield (10 boys and cruiser 8-10 boys)
  • Fraser Vaughan (12 boys and cruiser 11-12 boys)
  • Josh Jolly (15 boys and cruiser 15-16 boys)
  • Wade Worth (30-34 mens and cruiser 30-34 mens)
  • Jamie Truran (35-39 mens and cruiser 35-39 mens)
  • Hoylee-Ann Jackson (12 girls and cruiser 11-12 girls)
  • Fiona Langfeldt (50-54 women and cruiser 50-54 womens)

Josh Jolly

The next generation of riders was on full display at the championships with 90 riders in the 8 years and 9 years classes launching themselves around the track in fine fashion with some of the best finishes of the day occurring in these races.

That’s a wrap of the 2021 AusCycling BMX National Championships, a championship to remember for countless reasons. A special thank you to the fifty volunteers and officials who gave up their time to run this year's national championships, the effort everyone put in across the board in sweltering conditions was superb.
