Joel Marsh dominates Lake Macquarie BMX Racing National Series rounds, gains Superclass leader plate

May 28, 2025

Joel Marsh (Happy Valley BMX Club) has clicked off his third-straight Superclass Men win following a commanding weekend at rounds three and four of the 2025 AusCycling BMX Racing National Series in Lake Macquarie.

The 21-year-old was on a tear over both days at the Lake Macquarie BMX Club track, only dropping two laps all weekend in the second moto of Round 3 and first moto of Round 4.

Marsh led from start to finish under lights on Saturday night to take Round 3 and the series leader plate but had to dig deeper in the Round 4 final on Sunday after Rory Southwell (Macarthur BMX Club) led out of the gate into the first corner.

Marsh set up Southwell on the inside coming into the second corner, pushing the number 49 machine high to seal the pass for the lead.

Jesse Asmus (Nerang BMX Club) followed Marsh through in the same move and looked to be mounting a late charge until blowing his rear tyre on the final corner.

Marsh's trifecta of consecutive wins has him now leading the series by 30 points ahead of the final rounds at Cross Keys BMX in Adelaide on the July 5–6 weekend.

"It was a very successful weekend for me. I was very happy with my speed throughout the weekend and being able to eliminate mistakes and improve my lap times each race as the weekend goes on," Marsh said.

"Winning both rounds over the weekend is definitely a big confidence boost heading into the World Cups. Hopefully I can keep the momentum going and bring home some solid results.

"The main focus for this season would definitely be the World Cup circuit and World Championships. Although winning the national series is also a goal that I had set for the 2025 season as these first four rounds play a decent role in Worlds selection.

"I'll be hoping to back it up at rounds five and six at Cross Keys and keep the green plate going forward."

Southwell logged two impressive podium results over the weekend, finishing third on Saturday and second on Sunday.

Matty Tidswell (The Cove BMX Club) grabbed his second runner-up finish of the series in Round 3 and Bailey Seckold (Ashmore BMX Club) rounded out the podium in Round 4.
