Development Academies

AboutHigh Performance and Pathways

Supporting the Next Generation of Cyclists

The AusCycling Development Academies are a comprehensive program designed to identify, develop, and support promising young cyclists across all disciplines, states and territories. We provide a supportive stepping stone to help young riders reach their full potential.

How the Academies Benefit Riders:

  • Training Opportunities: Our Academies offer a variety of training opportunities tailored to your discipline and location.
  • Expert Coaching: Benefit from the guidance and support of experienced coaches who will help you refine your skills and achieve your cycling goals.
  • Reduced Costs: The Academies are a co-contribution program. AusCycling covers coaching and administration costs, while rider fees are minimised to include venue hire and any travel expenses.

The Academies Focus On:

  • Creating Consistent Development: Providing a uniform development pathway across Australia, regardless of location.
  • Performance Pathway Progression: Helping riders meet the key performance targets needed to progress to national and professional teams.
  • Smooth Transitions: Ensuring a smooth transition for riders entering the elite cycling pathway.
  • Cross-Discipline Collaboration: Encouraging collaboration and fostering well-rounded cyclists who can excel in multiple disciplines.
  • Broad Rider Support: Offering targeted development opportunities to a wide range of talented young riders.

Age Groups:

The program primarily focuses on riders between 14-17 years old. However, there may be some variation depending on the specific cycling discipline and local factors. We consider AusCycling's Rider Development Pathway, industry best practices, available local support, and existing programs when determining age group eligibility.

Academy Commitment:

The level of commitment required varies based on your location and chosen discipline. Most Academies are centred around camps with additional discipline-specific events. For detailed information on specific training requirements, please refer to the relevant discipline information.

Participating in Multiple Academies:

Cross-discipline collaboration is a core aspect of the Academies and we encourage participation in multiple Academies. For example, riders who qualify for the MTB (Endurance) program are automatically invited to road camps.

What You Receive as a Participant:

  • Academy Camp Support: Benefit from dedicated support staff during Academy camps.
  • Expert Coaching: Receive coaching guidance from experienced professionals at camps and clinics.
  • Learning and Development: Expand your knowledge with development opportunities in coaching and officiating.

Can I Keep My Current Coach?

Absolutely! The Academy coaches are there to specifically support you during camps and projects. We encourage you to maintain a strong relationship with your current coach.

The Relationship with Regional Academies of Sport:

The AusCycling Development Academies complement existing Regional Academies of Sport by targeting a higher level of development for aspiring elite cyclists.

How AusCycling Works with Commercial Providers:

We invite and value collaboration with commercial providers offering MTB development programs in Australia only. Register your program here to explore partnership opportunities and contribute to the development pathway.
