‘It’s incredible’: Hindley wins Tour de France Stage 5

Jul 6, 2023

Western Australian Jai Hindley has become just the eighth Australian to wear the yellow jersey after he soloed to victory in stage 5 of the Tour de France.

In his Tour de France debut, the BORA – hansgrohe rider positioned himself in the early breakaway on the 163km stage from Pau to Laruns in the  Pyrenees.

With 20km to go Hindley went solo and crossed the finish line with his first Tour de France victory.

The 2022 Giro d’Italia winner was lost for words after his emotional win.

“I just managed to find myself in the front group and enjoyed it out there today,” Hindley said after the race.

“It’s really incredible, I have no words.”

“This was not really the plan. We kind of improvised out there, it was the way I enjoy bike racing.

"I wanted to put as much as time as possible on the GC, and win the stage… and now find myself in the yellow jersey."

The win puts Hindley into the overall lead, 47 seconds ahead of defending champion Jonas Vingegaard, and 1 minute 40 seconds ahead of Tadej Pogacar.
