Introducing the inaugural Cassap Australian BMX Freestyle Scholarship

Aug 31, 2022

AusCycling is pleased to support the launch of the Cassap Australian BMX Freestyle Scholarship, which will be offered for the first time in 2022 to support the next generation of Australian BMX Freestylers.

It is an exciting time for Freestyle BMX in Australia, with Logan Martin crowned the 2021 Santini AusCycling Cyclist of the Year (Oppy Medal) after winning an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo, as well as bringing home the rainbow stripes for the second time at the 2021 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships in Montpellier, France.

Natalya Diehm is paving the way for Australian women in BMX Freestyle and was able to place fifth at the Tokyo Olympics despite riding with ruptured knee ligaments.

Freestyle BMX has a bright future down under and the Cassap Australian BMX Freestyle Scholarship hopes to support our next superstars to achieve their goals with the backing of Cassap BMX, AusCycling, BMX International and Australian BMX Hall of Fame.

The scholarship is the brainchild of one of Australia’s first Freestyle BMX superstars and Hall Of Fame Inductee - Steve Cassap.

In 2021, the iconic Cassap BMX brand was relaunched with a range of select re-issue and new product offerings, with a single goal in mind: to support Australian Freestyle BMX development.

Proceeds from the sale of Cassap BMX products will go towards supporting this initiative.

How the inaugural Cassap Australian BMX Freestyle Scholarship awardees will be chosen

The scholarship's first annual awardees will be selected at the 2022 AusCycling BMX Freestyle National Championships on November 19-20 at RampFest in Melbourne.

One male and one female rider will be chosen by the judges during the competition. To be eligible, riders must be aged between 12 and 17, and be an Australian citizen.

A majority decision by the judges (on the day of the National Championships finals) will decide the scholarship winners. In the case of a tie - the technical director of BMX - AusCycling will place a deciding vote.

Scholarship winners will receive a cash prize, along with Cassap promotional material and merchandise to become Cassap Scholarship ambassadors for the next 12 months.

The scholarship prize is intended to support travel and training expenses for each athlete. In addition to direct financial support, each athlete will receive Freestyle BMX products from Australia’s oldest and highly sought-after BMX Wholesale Distributor - BMX International.

Successful scholarship recipients will be invited to attend special AusCycling training sessions throughout the ensuing 12 months with the Australian Cycling Team BMX Freestyle squad, and also receive an invitation to attend the annual Australian BMX Hall Of Fame Gala Dinner and Awards Night on September 10 at Mercure Gold Coast.
