'I just felt really happy about myself and proud of myself': Combined training camp pushes Australia's next crop of BMX girls to reach new heights
Dec 5, 2024
AusCycling’s BMX Racing and BMX Freestyle programs joined forces last week to support and motivate the next generation of female athletes at an inspiring three-day cross-training camp.
The inaugural camp held on the Gold Coast utilised some of Australia’s premier BMX venues and coaching resources to offer emerging female athletes mentoring and support, with the aim of empowering riders by helping them to overcome fears and push their skills to new heights.
More than a dozen young female riders were challenged to step outside of their comfort zones, while fostering a deep love for the sport.
Gold Coast local Charli Guy – who has competed in both disciplines – shared how the camp delivered an unforgettable experience that combined rigorous training with the fun of riding.
“At the start, everyone was very nervous, especially the Race girls. But the Freestylers are the most supportive people ever, and they would just hype you up for every single thing, which was so cool to see. So really, it was just girls supporting girls, and it was awesome,” Guy said.
“I’d say it's definitely helped with my jumping, being able to be in the air for a little bit longer than a race jump, trying to go higher instead of low and fast attack, [and] obviously a bit of confidence taking away from the camp.
“Yes, it is scary because you're out of your comfort zone – for me, even still, I get scared and I've done it for a bit – but 100% [you should] get out of you comfort zone, try new things, because everyone just helps you out.”
BMX Racing W-Plate holder and 13 Girls National Champion Amelie Reid (Mandurah BMX) also said the camp had taken her riding to new levels.
“I think [it helped] getting over that nervous feeling you feel before you try something new. So, getting out of your mindset and thinking of the positives and not the negatives, and not what could go wrong, but thinking about how you would feel after doing it … I was dropping into massive quarter pipes that I've never dropped into before,” Reid said.
“The vibe was really good. Whenever a BMX Race girl would try something new or do something different, all the girls would cheer and support us, and they would all get around each other and stuff.
“It definitely helped me get out of my comfort zone and it brought my confidence up. I learned all these other new tricks and I just felt really happy about myself and proud of myself. I would definitely recommend to another girl to do this camp because it was a really cool experience.”
Camp diary:
Day 1 - Pump Track
The camp began with an introductory practical session at the Pizzey Park Pump Track in Miami, where an emphasis was placed on mastering the art of flow while incorporating essential bike handling skills. The girls worked well together as jumping, manualing, and pumping challenges were put in front of them.
Day 2 - Bike Park
The focus on day 2 shifted to the AusCycling National BMX Freestyle Park. Inclement weather meant the session was shifted to the indoor facility, but it didn’t stop the girls from learning to safely navigate the diverse sections of the park through a staged approach, with no pressure to master every element immediately. Expert freestyle riders and coaches provided personalised guidance and support to help each participant improve their skills.
Day 3 - Bike Park
Riders returned to the AusCycling National BMX Freestyle Park for a final day of pushing their boundaries. The girls were guided on how to link different sections of the park together and encouraged to confront and overcome their fears. For the BMX Racing girls, this meant overcoming fears as they learnt to drop in, launch into the foam pit, jump the box jump and tackle the spine.
The camp concluded with a group reflection on the past three days, recognising achievements, and setting future goals.
Planning has begun to ensure more combined sessions are held in 2025 with a continued focus on both skill development and enjoyment.
