Head winds and dominant wins at 2020 Masters RoadNats

Dec 10, 2020

Day two of the AusCycling 2020 Masters Road National Championships on the Gold Coast was dominated by the performance of Sydney Uni Velo Club's Charl Van Wyk, who rode nearly the majority of the race on his own to take out the gold medal in the Masters Men 2 Criterium race at Luke Harrop Memorial Criterium Centre.

The New South Welshman dropped the field only minutes into the 40 minutes race, which saw riders face strong blustery headwinds up the finishing straight making it difficult to produce any sort of late attack.

With the pace not to his satisfaction Van Wyk opened the engine up on the backstraight and never looked back, with the gap reaching nearly 20 seconds at one stage.

"Got the gap, had the momentum, but I was wishing for the minutes to pass."

"I wanted to win this race I had a really bad TT (time trial) so it was motivation."

After a bronze yesterday in the Time Trial, Laurelea Moss took two steps up the podium to claim a much sought after gold in the Masters Women 3.

The Coffs Harbour Cycle Club rider said while the wind put the brakes on riders up the finishing straight there were attacks aplenty out the back as everyone was trying to jockey for a spot.

It was a welcome return for Moss to the scence.

"I'm thrilled to bits as it's been a couple of years since I've done the Nationals on the road and just really glad AusCycling could put on an event that so far has been such a lot of fun."

Riders now turn their attention toward a long haul in the saddle with the road race to begin at Guanaba tomorrow at 7am
