At Canberra BMX Club, volunteers are the backbone of the club, and people like Simon Mula are being recognised for the difference they make both on and off the track.
Like many parents involved in grassroots sport, Simon’s journey into volunteering started with his child’s love of BMX.
“My son is a rider, and I was keen to help out,” Simon said. “I put my hand up, and the next thing you know, I was on the committee.
“It’s a really good community.”

Simon is one of the 110 members of the Canberra BMX Club.
Since joining the club in July last year, Simon has become a familiar face around the venue, helping across a range of roles including the BBQ, the canteen, and working on the gates.
To Simon, volunteering is about creating a welcoming environment where young riders want to keep coming back.
“Seeing the new riders having a go is great,” he said. “Encouraging them, especially when a little one cannot get up the hill and you have to give them a little push.”
That hands-on support plays an important role in helping riders build confidence and feel part of the club community.
The club has also benefited from Simon’s willingness to step in and help wherever needed, something he says has become one of the most rewarding parts of being involved.

Simon performs many roles when he volunteers at the club.
“I just enjoy putting my hand up to help out and be involved anywhere I can for the club.”
As clubs across the country celebrate National Volunteer Week, stories like Simon’s are a reminder of the vital role volunteers play in creating strong, welcoming sporting communities.
His advice to other parents thinking about volunteering is simple.
“Have a go,” he said. “Help your kids out by helping out. Show your support by encouraging them.”
