Caleb Ewan wins Stage 5 of the 2021 Giro d'Italia

May 13, 2021

Australia’s Caleb Ewan, 26, sprinted to victory in stage five of the 2021 Giro d'Italia, his first stage victory at the 104th Giro d’Italia and his fourth career win at the Corsa Rosa.

Ewan was perfectly positioned heading into the final kilometre, before dropping back behind the jostling peloton. However, a trademark Ewan burst on the sprint to the line to overhauled Italians Giacomo Nizzolo and Elia Viviani who settled for second and third in Cattolica.

“The sprint itself was reasonably straight forward. It was slightly uphill in the last few 100 meters. I went to the right side and got boxed in. I moved a bit to the left and I had enough time to come around in the end. I tried to take the line with the least wind possible,” said Ewan.

“Winning like I did today was obviously my first goal of the three Grand Tours. It’s still too early to leave the Giro. I’ll definitely be here tomorrow and I’ll try to win more stages.”

Ewan, from the New South Wales Southern Highlands, began cycling at eight and collecting national titles across all the junior age categories on both the road and track.

He claimed a junior road national crown in 2010, and in 2011, he won multiple gold at the Junior Track National Championship before storming to win the world title in the Omnium at the 2011 Junior World Track Championships.

Ewan joined the Jayco AIS World Tour Academy in 2013, before moving across the Orica Green Edge team in 2014.

He joined Lotto Soudal in 2019 and since 2017, has claimed stage wins at all three Grand Tours including four at the Giro d’Italia, five at the Tour de France and one at the Vuelta a Espana.
