Australians win 17 masters world titles in Manchester

Oct 11, 2023

Australia’s masters cyclists are draped in rainbows after claiming an impressive 17 track world titles in Manchester last week.

The all-conquering Aussie riders won 34 medals at the UCI Masters Track World Championships in the first week of October.

Bev Anderson led the charge by adding five rainbow jerseys to her multi-discipline collection. The Canberran will be able to hang up rainbow jerseys from the 65-69 sprint, scratch race, time trial, individual pursuit and 55-64 team sprint alongside the off-road titles she claimed earlier this year in Marathon MTB and cross-country mountain bike.

The other multiple world champions were Julie Barnett, who earned four world titles; Gary Mandy, who won three events; and Chris Murray and Bill Gordin, who became dual world champions.

Barnett set a new Australian record in the 60-64 age group for the 500m time trial – a feat achieved also accomplished by Jim Veal (ACT) for the 75-79 men.

A new national record was also set in the 35-44 men’s team sprint by Doug Higginson, Nathan Graves and Daniel Rickard.
