Aussies ready for first world championships in three years

Jul 15, 2022

Momentum continues to build as 102 challenge riders have been confirmed to represent Australia at the 2022 UCI BMX Racing World Championships in Nantes, France.

The challenge class refers to every age group outside of the elite categories, from 8 boys and girls all the way to 50+ men and women. For more information on how selection works for challenge classes, click here.

They will join the 10 elite riders selected to the Australian Cycling Team in June.

The 2019 edition was the last World Championships for challenge riders and saw close to 150 Australians compete across 42 categories. They walked away with 19 world plates, including eight podium spots.

From the 2019 cohort, six Aussies will head to the south of France this year as defending plate holders. They include Cameron Gatt of Geelong BMX club, who will be battling to keep his plate in both the 14 boys and the 13-14 boys cruiser after finishing fourth and eighth, respectively.

Also racing with a ‘W’ plate will be Amelia Stichbury in the 12 girls, Stephanie Alexander in the 13 girls, Noah Elton in the 16 boys, Jamie Truran in the 35+ men and Letitia Weatherhead in the 40+ women cruiser.

Also among our representatives will be a West Australian family who are excited about travelling together to wear the green and gold.

The McLeod family – Memphis in the 9 boys, Hudson in the 15 boys and dad Joel in the 35+ men and 35-39 men cruiser – will all compete at this year’s championships.

“Everyone is feeling great and excited,” Joel said.

“Preparation has been pretty full-on with a few hiccups along the way, but me and the boys are coming in probably the best we’ve felt and confident in the training we’ve done.”

This will be the second world championships for youngest son Memphis and Joel but the first world championships for oldest son Hudson.

“It means everything to me, the memories and the experiences that we are sharing together is unforgettable,” Joel said about sharing this experience with his sons.

“Representing Australia is something we’re all looking forward to, but getting the chance to explore France is also up there.”
