Olympic medallist, world champion, rising stars all ready to battle for 2025 BMX Freestyle National Championships

Feb 14, 2025

Young talents will go head-to-head with some of the best riders in Australia, including an Olympic medallist and a world champion, for the 2025 BMX Freestyle national title this weekend.

The battle for the green and gold jersey will take place at the state-of-the-art National BMX Freestyle Park at the Gold Coast Sports Precinct from Saturday morning, culminating with the elite finals on Sunday afternoon.

Paris Olympic bronze medallist Natalya Diehm is one of the big names lining up at this year’s national championships and may use the event as a chance to unleash some new tricks.

While she has stated she is shifting focus this year as she puts emphasis on having fun and trying out new tricks, she remains one of the favourites to win the elite women’s crown and clinch a fifth national title.

“I always want to do my best, and I always want to get on the podium. But also after last year and it all being such results-based goals, it puts so much pressure on you as an athlete that I just want to have fun this year and trial and error new things, I want to get some new tricks in my runs,” Diehm said.

Two-time national champion Sarah Nicki, a member of the ARA Australian Cycling Team, will be another strong contender having continued her strong form throughout 2024 and recently won the Queensland State Title ahead of Diehm.

Sarah Nicki recently won the Qld State titles.

A number of young riders will also make the step-up from amateur to the elite ranks for the first time this year, including 15-year-old Kebe Standford-Modini who only started riding two years ago after being selected for the Youfor32 program.

In the elite men, the battle for the crown will be wide open with last year’s national champion Samual Grace out with injury, and three-time world champion Logan Martin deciding to not compete. But another world champion is raring to go.

Brandon Loupos returns to his biggest competition after being sidelined after a major back injury last year.

He will be looking to back up his recent gold medal at the Queensland State Titles last weekend, with another gold at the national championships.

“It was challenging to come back from my back injury, more mentally than physically. I feel great on my bike and feeling better every day but I still am building back to where I was,” Loupos said.

“I'm proud of myself and have a long way to go still, but I believe in myself and I know that my time is still yet to come. I can’t wait to get another chance to compete this weekend at the national championship and work towards being back in winning shape.”

Last year’s amateur national champion Will Spedding is making the step up to the elite competition and has shown promising form, winning silver in elites at the NSW/ACT State Titles and bronze at the Victorian State Titles, as is Keegan Pryor who won bronze at the Queensland State Titles.
