Masters & Junior Road Nationals: Time trial results

Sep 19, 2024

The first 22 national champions have been decided at the AusCycling Masters and Junior Road National Championships in the individual time trial.

Riders battled strong crosswinds today on the out-and-back course along Taplan Road south-east of Loxton, South Australia.

Over the 10-kilometre course for under-15 boys, Victoria’s Maximus Moore (Hawthorn CC) edged out Luca Zucchiatti by just four seconds.

There were familiar names atop the podiums in the other junior categories.

In the under-15 girls' event, Ava Robbins (Balmoral CC), who won the criterium last year, added the time trial crown to her palmarès.

Likewise, last year’s under-15 boys road race champion Lachlan Stewart (Alpine CC) won the 16-kilometre race after moving up to the under-17s.

Meanwhile, Queensland’s Megan Moore (Balmoral CC) upgraded her 2023 bronze medal to gold in the under-17 girls.

In the masters categories, the home state picked up its first wins of the championships through Margaret Boylan and Michael Davies (Adelaide Hills CC), Matthew Sparnon and David Gomer (Norwood CC).

Defending champion Anna Davis (Coburg CC) set the fastest women’s time with 24:36.16, while Sparnon’s 20:25.34 made him the fastest man across the 16 kilometres.

While Myles Higgins (Shepparton CC) won the masters 10 category for men aged over 75, AusCycling acknowledged the efforts of Kevin Phillips (Norwood CC), who turns 91 in December, for completing the race as the oldest competitor in the field.

The 2024 AusCycling Masters and Junior Road National Championships continue tomorrow with road races for the juniors, masters women 1−5, and masters men 1−2 in the east of Loxton.
