2021 Federation University Road National Championships Guide

More than 1400 cyclists from across Australia will descend on Ballarat this week for the AusCycling 2021 Federation University Road National Championships.

The 2021 Championships, usually held in the first week of January but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be one of Victoria's first major events of the year.

A host of UCI World Tour professionals, reigning champions, Olympic and Paralympic athletes, rising stars and the country's best club cyclists, will vie for the coveted green and gold national champion's jerseys.

The five days of action in Ballarat and Buninyong from February 3-7 will feature the time trial, criterium, road race, plus Gran Fondo events.

In all, 151 AusCycling national champions will be crowned across the elite, under 23, under 19, para, deaf, club and intellectual impairment categories. 40 UCI gold medals will be awarded in the UCI Gran Fondo World Qualifier events in the road race and time trial.

The elite, under 23 and under 19 junior women's fields have attracted superb entries, with all events boasting significant increases compared to recent years.

Reigning champions Chloe Hosking and Sarah Gigante headline the elite women's field, alongside 2019 time trial champion Grace Brown, former criterium champion Sarah Roy and Jess Allen. The field’s strength runs deep with a host of contenders including Lucy Kennedy, Rachel Neylan, Lauretta Hanson and Lauren Kitchen set to challenge.

In the elite men's fields, reigning time trial and champion Luke Durbridge (currently subject to Western Australian border restrictions), reigning road champion Cameron Meyer, and 2018 road champion Alex Edmondson spearhead a strong field.

Lucas Hamilton, James Whelan, Kaden Groves, Chris Harper and former criterium champions Steele von Hoff and Brenton Jones will also return.

The Australian Cycling Team's Olympic Track Endurance team will be on the start line including defending criterium champion Sam Welsford, Annette Edmondson, Ashlee Ankudinoff, Georgia Baker, Alex Porter, Kelland O'Brien as well as young guns Luke Plapp and Maeve Plouffe.

In the para-cycling events, a host of the world's best will lin up including world champions Carol Cooke, David Nicholas, Paige Greco, Darren Hicks and Emily Petricola.

The event will also see record numbers of Australia's Club cyclists experience the Championships through the Club Teams and Gran Fondo events.

Broadcast/Live Stream

The AusCycling 2021 Federation University Road National Championships will feature domestic coverage on SBS and FoxSports Australia, and for the first time, international broadcast coverage through the Global Cycling Network.

The live-action will feature the Friday night criteriums from the Ballarat CBD, before featuring action from Sunday's women's and men's road races on the famous Mt Buninyong course.

A live RoadNats Live Show will provide insights and interviews nightly at 7 pm (Friday 9 pm) via the AusCycling Facebook page, while highlight packages will also be available online throughout the Championships.
