2021-22 HIGH PERFORMANCE NETWORK EMERGING AND DEVELOPING ATHLETES CATEGORISATION

Apr 30, 2021

AusCycling is pleased to confirm the 66 athletes who have been categorised as Emerging and Developing athletes in the disciplines of track endurance and track sprint for 2021-22.

The categorisation is comprised of 32 Emerging (23 Endurance and 9 Sprint) and 34 Developing (25 Endurance and 9 Sprint) athletes from all state and territory institutes and academies of sport which form the cycling national High-Performance Network (HPN).

The key objective of the HPN is to develop and prepare the athletes for a successful progression into the Australian Cycling Team's Podium Potential and Podium categories. About the Australian Cycling Team Pathway.

Athlete Categorisation is used to identify, track, and prioritise athletes at each stage of the Performance Pathway and support the Australian Cycling Teams consistently winning medals at major international events.

During the categorisation process, AusCycling compared performance progressions of athletes against the progressions of medal-winning athletes at World Championships and Olympic Games in the past ten years.

This process is based on a national Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) framework called Athlete Categorisation, which provides sports with a method of assessing an athlete's performance trajectory to the elite podium.

Athletes categorised as Emerging and Developing receive recognition by the AIS and receive support in their ongoing development in several formats, including access to state high-performance facilities, dedicated camps, and race support.

Categorisation for Emerging and Developing athletes in BMX, MTB, Paralympic and Road will be announced later in 2021.

Director of Performance Pathway for the Australian Cycling Team, Jesse Korf:

"After undergoing the categorisation approach, it is very exciting to see that we have 66 athletes in our talent pool that are tracking towards highly aspirational outcomes of elite podiums at World Championships and Olympic Games.

"We wish to congratulate all that received categorisation. Having a thriving talent pool to underpin the elite National Team programs is a temperature gauge for the
health of our sports and significant for the sustainability of our international performances in years to come."
