Champion coaches to guide cycling’s next gen

AusCycling has appointed 11 coaches to guide aspiring athletes under its newest junior road program.

The line-up includes former national champions across multiple disciplines, plus regional academy coaches and Ride Nation coaches. They will help deliver the AusCycling Development Academy: Road across seven states and territories.

Brenton Jones – the 2019 elite criterium national champion and current National Road Series racer– will lead the program in Victoria alongside Kerry King.

Two-time elite sprint national champion Caitlin Ward will coach the South Australian program, while former under-23 criterium champion Scott Law will give his expertise in New South Wales alongside Lynne Vaughan, a masters XCO national champion on the mountain bike.

Sian Mulholland, a multiple national champion in the 1980s and longstanding contributor to women’s cycling, will be the ACT coach.

Tasmania’s David Walker, West Australian track sprinter Luke Zaccaria and the Queensland trio of Brooke Carnes, Scott Allison and former professional Malcolm Rudolph complete the appointments.

“With the knowledge our coaches have gained over their racing and coaching careers, our development pathways have never looked so good” said Kipp Kaufman, Executive General Manager of Sport.

The AusCycling Development Academies were launched this year across road, track and para-cycling, MTB and BMX racing as a supporting step to develop young riders and prepare them for performance pathways.

The junior road academy will provided training opportunities, coaching support and targeted training sessions or camps.

The academy is currently accepting applications from riders born from 2006–2009, with cross-discipline applications encouraged (especially from MTB XCO riders).
