Julian Baudry and Emma Ochoa race to Junior NRS lead after GC wins at Canberra Junior Tour
May 29, 2024
Julian Baudry (Alpine CC) and Emma Ochoa (99 Bikes Women’s Academy/Carnegie Caulfield CC) will wear the first leader jerseys of the 2024 BikeChain Junior 19 National Road Series after winning the Canberra Junior Tour last weekend.
Baudry struck late in the four-stage tour and won the general classification by 10 seconds over Eddie Willis (Team BridgeLane/Tamworth CC) after a 13-second individual time trial victory on the out-and-back 16.5-kilometre course.
Other stage winners were Jameson Key (Van D'am Racing p/b Butterfields/Norwood CC) in the criterium, Tully Hickman (Villawood Cycling Team/Port Adelaide CC) in the road race and Edward Marcks (Canberra CC) in the kermesse.
Ochoa denied Georgia Gardiner (Canberra CC) a home tour win by one second following her 10-second Stage 4 ITT victory.
Gardiner, who finished on the podium in three of the four stages, will travel to Brisbane next month tied on 275 points with Ochoa courtesy of points on offer for top-three stage finishes.
Ochoa will wear the leader’s jersey on countback due to overall tour wins taking precedence in the series standings.
Leani van der Berg (South Coast CC) dominated the racing at Stromlo Forest Park’s Stephen Hodge Criterium Cycling Circuit, sprinting to the criterium and kermesse stage wins. Hannah Gianatti (Penrith CC) won the Stage 2 road race.
The BikeChain Junior 19 National Road Series will continue in south-east Queensland on the June 22-23 weekend at the Balmoral Junior and Women’s Tour, a four-stage race featuring a prologue, road race, Mount Gravatt hill climb and kermesse.
The series, now in its third year, provides under-19 cyclists with national-level races to develop the next generation of road cyclists. Past series winners are Talia Appleton, Mia Williams, William Eaves and Levi Hone.
