Sydney’s Sarah Roy was a triathlete before she decided to focus on road cycling from 2009 onwards.

At the start of 2014, Roy shocked the favourites to win the elite criterium national title in Ballarat.

Until that year, Roy had financed her cycling career by working as a personal trainer and coach. At the age of 27, she turned professional with the French team known today as FDJ-Suez. From 2015 to 2021, Roy raced with the GreenEdge Cycling team.

While not a pure sprinter, Roy has combined a strong engine, mental toughness and a fast finish to seize her opportunities throughout her career.

Her first professional win came in 2016 at the Ladies Tour in the Netherlands. She earned two more wins each in 2017 and 2018 including her first WorldTour wins, both at the Women’s Tour in Great Britain.

In 2018, she represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, helping to deliver Chloe Hosking to the gold medal while finishing fifth herself.

After feeling below her best for several seasons, Roy underwent surgery for iliac artery endofibrosis at the end of 2019.

Her biggest win on home soil came in January 2021 in Ballarat. Roy soloed to victory in the Australian road race national championships after attacking from the early breakaway.

In 2022, Roy took part in her second Commonwealth Games and won bronze in the road race in Birmingham, while teammate Georgia Baker won gold. Roy also represented Australia on the track at those Games, placing fourth in the individual pursuit.

Later that year, Roy returned home to race at the UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong. There, she was part of the bronze medal-winning Australian squad in the mixed relay team time trial, racing alongside Baker, Alex Manly, Luke Plapp, Luke Durbridge and Michael Matthews.

In total, Roy has represented Australia at seven Road World Championships.
