Growing up on the Central Coast of NSW, Jaie Toohey initially found his roots in BMX racing before transitioning to the world of freestyle in his early teens.
A regular of the X Games and exhibition scene, Toohey is known for his commitment to pushing the limits, cited as the first rider in the world to land the front bike flip to tail whip, and the backflip triple tail whip.
His first major competition results came in 2018, where he finished sixth at the X Games Sydney BMX Big Air Finals. The following year, Toohey competed in his first UCI event, finishing 25th at the World Cup round in Montpellier, France.
His first major podium came at the 2021 Summer X Games, placing second in the Men's BMX Dirt Best Trick and fourth in the BMX Park Best Trick, while Montpellier was again the site of UCI success, with Toohey recording a top ten finish at the BMX Freestyle World Championships that year.
More podiums followed at Summer X Games in 2022, with Toohey finishing third in the BMX MegaPark and second in Men's BMX Dirt competitions.
Toohey would also podium at the Oceania Continental Championships in 2022, finishing third in a stacked field of riders, followed by a top 10 finish at the final UCI World Cup round that year, held on the Gold Coast.
At the 2023 California X Games, Toohey would again take bronze in the Men's BMX MegaPark, and improved on his previous best at the Oceania Continental Championships with a silver medal. Just a week after the Oceanias, he would achieve his best result at an Australian National Championships, finishing second.
Undoubtedly his best result in a UCI competition came at the 2023 World Cup round in Montpellier, where he stunned himself and the judges to finish fourth overall. A top-15 finish followed shortly after at the UCI World Cup round in Brussels.
Toohey was one of four Australian men to wear the green-and-gold at the 2023 UCI World Championships in Glasgow where he finished 25th, and shortly after he posted back-to-back silver medals at UCI C1 events on the Gold Coast.
2024 started with another bronze at the Oceania Continental Championships, while the X Games again proved fruitful, with Toohey taking bronze in BMX Dirt Best Trick and a fourth place in BMX Dirt competition at the Ventura X Games.
