Jay Vine to replace Plapp at UCI Road World Championships

Aug 22, 2024

Jay Vine has been selected to race the 2024 UCI Road Cycling World Championships for the ARA Australian Cycling Team after Lucas Plapp withdrew for medical reasons.

Plapp had been selected to contest the individual time trial in Zurich, but he was injured in a heavy crash during the Olympic Games.

After being notified of Plapp’s withdrawal from the team, AusCycling’s National Selection Panel has named Vine as his replacement.

This will be the second UCI Road World Championships for Vine, 28, who contested the individual time trial in Scotland last year. The 2023 national champion recently won his first UCI-level time trial, triumphing at the Vuelta a Burgos this month.

Vine will race the elite men’s individual time trial on September 22 and the mixed relay team time trial on September 25.

The full composition of Australia’s mixed relay team has not yet been announced.

Update, 6 September: Jay Vine will now also race in the elite men's road race replacing Chris Harper, who has withdrawn for medical reasons.
