Lauren Bates leads Australia home to wrap up Junior Worlds campaign

Sep 27, 2024

The junior riders of the ARA Australian Cycling Team have completed their 2024 UCI Road World Championships with two top-10 results in Zurich.

On Tuesday, Canberra’s Lauren Bates (pictured) placed sixth in the junior women’s individual time trial. Yesterday, she delivered another strong performance with 11th in an attritional, rain-soaked road race, finishing with the main chase group behind a leading trio.

Bates was joined in both events by Emily Dixon, who suffered an untimely mechanical in the road race. It saw her lose contact in the last five kilometres,  dropping her to 23rd place behind the British winner, Cat Ferguson.

Yesterday afternoon, four of Australia’s under-19 men contested the junior men’s road race under similarly grim conditions that saw early 70 of the 159 starters withdraw. Max Goold was Australia’s top finisher in 32nd place.

The Aussie juniors came closest to a medal in Monday’s time trial, when Wil Holmes finished off the podium by just eight seconds.

The ARA Australian Cycling Team will be in action again today in the under-23 men’s road race, which starts at 12:45pm local time (8:45pm AEST) and can be watched live on SBS VICELAND and SBS On Demand.
