Jai Hindley tests positive for COVID-19

Sep 16, 2022

Australian rider and 2022 Giro d’Italia winner, Jai Hindley, has tested positive for COVID19.

Hindley, who is a member of the Australian team for next week’s UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong, tested positive on September 12, following his campaign in the Vuelta a España.

According to Australian Cycling Team Chief Medical Officer, Dr Kevyn Hernandez, Hindley is largely asymptomatic, but will be monitored closely over the coming days.

“We’re in regular contact with Jai and his support team in Europe,” Hernandez said.

“Jai's heath is something we are monitoring daily with him and his professional team.

“Jai tested positive more than a week before the competition, but we will make a final decision on his participation closer to the event. As with all events, we have a plan b and plan c, something all sporting teams need to have these days.

“At this stage, we’re hoping Jai will be able to leave Europe on Monday to join the rest of the team in Wollongong mid-week.”

All Australian Cycling Team athletes and relevant staff are subject to AusCycling’s COVID19 protocols which are designed to reduce the risk of infection before and during competition.

More than 1,000 of the world’s top riders from 70 nations will compete in the UCI Road World Championships, which begin on Saturday, September 18 with the Elite Time Trials for women and men.
