Glasgow Daily - August 9

Aug 9, 2023

Hi from Glasgow!

With five more medals overnight, there’s no slowing down for the ARA Australian Cycling Team even as the track competition nears its end.

Amanda Reid picked up her third and fourth medals to close our para-cycling track campaign in fine fashion.

In the men’s kilo, we had two Aussies on the podium. Matt Glaetzer broke the national record twice in one day and will bring home a silver medal, while Sydney boy Tom Cornish picked up his first individual medal - a hard-earned bronze. “We’re in a strong place with Aussie sprinting,” Glaetzer said, and we can only nod our heads furiously.

Finally, after yesterday’s Madison, we could all see that Georgia Baker was on fire. She’s backed up in the points race to take another fine silver. Brilliant.

Over on the road, we didn’t have it our way. Illness forced out Ruby Roseman-Gannon, then Luke Plapp crashed out in the opening kilometre of the mixed relay team time trial. There was really no recovering from that, and we’ve had to settle for sixth on an unlucky day.

We’re past halfway at these UCI Cycling World Championships, and there’s plenty still to come. Starting tomorrow: cross-country MTB, para-cycling road and road individual time trials. We’re ready!
