Glasgow Daily - August 5

Aug 5, 2023

Australia continues to come agonisingly close to taking their first rainbow jersey at these World Championships, with another three silvers and a bronze added to the medal tally overnight.

The night got off to a promising start at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, with Amanda Reid taking bronze in the Women C2 Individual Pursuit.

After posting the second fastest time in qualifying, Michael Shippley looked poised for a podium finish in the C4 1km Time Trial, and he didn't disappoint, taking silver with a time of 1:04.813.

Kristina Clonan put together an almost perfect race in the Women Elite Time Trial, edged out by Germany's Emma Hinze by just 0.136 seconds, giving the Queenslander silver and her first ever world championship medal.

The most dramatic moment of the evening came in the final race of the night, with Australia unable to hold off a fast-finishing Dutch team in the Men Elite Team Sprint gold medal final, falling by just 0.035 seconds.

Australia had a character-building day out at Fort William in the junior finals. After qualifying fifth fastest, Sacha Mills was the highest placed Aussie in the Junior Women, finishing in 12th position. In the Junior Men Finals, national champion Kael Foale was the highest placed Aussie in 18th.

Australian riders qualified in 10th place in both the Elite Men and Women categories, with Sian A'Hern and Troy Brosnan leading the green-and-gold charge for tomorrow's finals.

Looking ahead, and no less than four disciplines will be in action tonight, with BMX Freestyle and Road Race events getting underway, while more medals will be decided in the Downhill and Track.
