Matthew Glaetzer and Matthew Richardson through to Olympic keirin quarter-finals in Tokyo

Aug 7, 2021

Delight for Matt Richardson and Matt Glaetzer as both riders are through to the quarter-finals of the Men's Keirin. Richardson was caught up in all the drama in the heats as his opening heat required a re-run due to a crash. In the re-run, Richardson pushed hard and finished third, however, second place was relegated and Richardson was promoted to second.

Glaetzer narrowly missed out on automatic qualification to the quarter-finals in his heat after a final dash at the line just saw him just miss second. The three-time Olympian showed his class in the repechage, crossing the line first.

Unfortunately, for the Australian Olympic Team in the Men's Madison Final, the fast and furious pace was on from the outset of the 200-lap event, with the 60km/hour speeds forcing several nations out of the race early.

Our Aussie duo of Kell O'Brien & Leigh Howard fought hard but were unable to finish the race and ultimately were placed 12th.
