Day 2 - Reid smashes world record - AusCycling Track National Championships 

Records tumbled on the second day of the 2020 AusCycling Track National Championships for Elite, Para & Under 19 at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane on Thursday.

Reigning world champion Amanda Reid bettered her own C2 500m Time Trial world record which she earlier in 2020 at the Para World Championships, while Gordon Allan set a new national record in the C2 1000m Time Trial.

“The aim today was to go under the 39 seconds, so it was pretty surreal to go under and with the world record comes with it,” said Reid, who posted a blistering time of 38.734 seconds in her rainbow jersey to eclipse her own mark by 0.3 of a second.

Gordon Allan broke the Australian record in the C2 1000m Time Trial, despite a late schedule change which cut his warmup short.

“Despite everything that has happened this year due to COVID-19, the silver lining is that the extra year of training has ensured that I have time to be a better athlete and has given me time to work on things that I didn’t have 12 months ago,” said Allan.

Paige Greco of South Australia rode a 39.734 second 500m Time Trial to take gold in the C3 Category.

Emily Petricola (QLD) secured gold with a time of 38.734 seconds in front of a home crowd in the C4 500m Time Trial.

Bronwyn Dolman of South Australia rode a 40.615 second 500m Time Trial to claim gold in the C4 Category.

The home crowd served beneficial for David Nicholas (Queensland), edging out Victorian rider William Zammit for gold medal honours.

Patrick Best secured Tasmania’s first medal for the 2021 Championship event in the C4 1000m Time Trial with an impressive time of 1:11.832 seconds.

Victorians dominated the Para AWII Women 500m Time Trial podium with Molly Thatcher and Georgia Powning collecting gold and silver medals.

Victoria continued to dominate in the AWII Men’s 1000m Time Trial with Nathan Broeren collecting gold with 1.06 seconds ahead of Queenslander Nathan Glarvey.

Another Queenslander took advantage of the local crowd as Michael Shippley (Queensland) stormed home to claim the gold medal in the Men’s C5 Category 1000m Time Trial. Alistair Donohoe (Victoria) and Daniel Van Der Laan (South Australia) rounded out the podium in second and third place respectively.

South Australia swept the WB 1000m Time Trial podium with Madelen McNeil and Candice Kennedy securing gold and silver.

Again, South Australia dominated in the 1000m Time Trial, this time with Beau Wootton securing gold in the MB category.
