The 2021 AusCycling BMX National Cup starts with a bang!

Mar 3, 2021

The revamped national competition for BMX in Australia commenced throughout February, with multiple states hosting their first rounds of the State/Territory series.

What is the National Cup?

The 2021 AusCycling BMX National Cup is a series event where riders can earn points in Platinum, Gold and Silver events. Series events can start on 1 January and lasts until the 2021 AusCycling BMX National Championships in November.

Throughout the season, riders are awarded points for their best results from up to eight races, including three State/Territory series rounds and the State/Territory championships, as well as three national rounds and the 2021 AusCycling BMX National Championships.

The first rounds of the State/Territory series commenced in February as many riders across the country hit the track to earn their first points ever in the National Cup, with the live table updated as soon as the times are in.

Huge turnouts to opening rounds

New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania all hosted the first State/Territory series rounds halfway through February, boasting great rider turnouts.

Wynyard BMX Club hosted the inaugural Tasmanian state series round, with over 100 riders heading to the track. Reece Ellis in the men’s Superclass event was too good as he was flawless in all four motos and then the final.

This victory took Ellis to the top of the AusCycling National Cup in the Superclass men’s with Jack Davis joining him at the top of the ladder the next day as he blitzed the first round of the NSW/ACT series at Maitland Tenambit BMX Club, not dropping a single moto throughout the day.

Over on the women’s Superclass ledger, Tahlia Marsh of Clarence Valley BMX, Cayley Quill of Launceston BMX, and Georgia Potter of Happy Valley BMX occupied the top spot after successful opening State/Territory series rounds. Over twenty female superclass riders across the three races thus far, with a handful of states still to have their opening rounds.

The next week, Matt Tidswell of the Cove BMX club joined Davis and Ellis leading the national cup, after taking out the first state series in South Australia.

With the number of riders in the nine boy’s/girl’s to 13 boy’s/girl’s, each race across the nation will play a pivotal role in how the table shapes and changes as a handful of riders will hold the top spot for a week or more before a new rider comes along and takes the number one spot.

Tassie and WA Top of the table

The final weekend in February saw Tasmania hold their second round of the state series at Launceston BMX club and West Australia hold back-to-back rounds at Southern Districts and Byford BMX clubs.

These rounds saw Tasmanian and Western Australian riders rocket up to the top of the AusCycling National Cup, with close to 40 riders boasting a total of 160 points from 160 available.

Over 1,500 riders are a part of the AusCycling National Cup, check where you stand below as well as where your next race is.

Stay Up to Date

As the year goes on, the rider’s scores will slowly separate, and once we get to the pointy end of the season, a win will mean that much more with state championships and the national championships in Perth, Western Australia worth more points, respectively.

With more races coming up in nearly every state, each table will be updated weekly, so make sure you’re keeping track of where you sit!
