ARA Australian Cycling Team withdraws from UCI Urban Cycling World Championships

AusCycling has withdrawn the Australian team from the 2026 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with the safety and wellbeing of our athletes and staff our highest priority.

The decision follows consultation with athletes, staff and the Selection Panel, with the athletes fully informed and supportive of the decision. It reflects the escalating regional conflict, the loss of life and the Australian Government’s updated Smartraveller advice.

As of 15 October, Smartraveller advises Australians to reconsider their need to travel to Saudi Arabia due to the unpredictable security situation, with military strikes and reprisal attacks occurring across the country, including Riyadh. The advice now specifically states do not travel to King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh following recent security incidents disrupting airport operations. The Government also warns of potential airspace closures, flight cancellations and rapidly changing security conditions.

In light of these developments, AusCycling cannot justify exposing our athletes and staff to these risks.

AusCycling, alongside other nations, has advocated for the event to be relocated. With the championships still scheduled to proceed in Riyadh from 3−7 November, we have made the decision not to attend. This decision is based on our duty of care to our athletes and staff and is not one we have taken lightly.

While this is a disappointing outcome for our athletes, their safety must come first. AusCycling will continue to support their preparation through our planned training and competition program, with athlete development, readiness and preparation for the LA 2028 Olympic Games remaining our priority.
