Tiffany Cromwell finishes 10th at UCI Gravel World Championships in Italy

Oct 9, 2023

Tiffany Cromwell would record Australia’s best result at the 2023 UCI Gravel World Championships held in Veneto, Italy.

An impressive field of over 100 registered riders tackled the 140km course with 1660m elevation gain in the Veneto regions.

Cromwell was joined by fellow ARA Australian Cycling teammates Cassia Boglio (56), Ella Bloor (62) and Darcie Richards (69) on the start line.

The first separation came after 40km when a group of 25 which included Cromwell came to the front led by the Italian quartet of Soraya Paladin, Elena Cecchini, Silvia Persico and Gaia Realini.

Heading towards the finale the big attacks began with Poland’s Kasia Niewiadoma breaking away with 25km to go to ride solo to the finish line.

Cromwell would finish in 10th,, seven minutes behind Niewiadoma.

In the elite men’s race as well as battling lingering COVID symptoms Nathan Haas’ bike was “lost in transit” forcing the Colnago backed rider to compete on last year’s bike which was stored in the company’s museum.

Haas’ hastily retrieved bike was not enough to inspire the gravel specialist to the rainbow jersey, which was won by Slovenian Matej Mohoric.

In the 240 strong field, fellow Australian’s Jacob Langham (67), Alex Lack (83), Connor Sens (100), Declan Irvine (101) and Matthew Shepherd (129) would also take on the 169km course which included difficult off-road climbs.
